    CrossFit classes are our core offering at CrossFit Altius. These classes are created to challenge you in all areas of strength, flexibility and metabolic conditioning after your completion of the Fundamentals of CrossFit class. New to the area with at least three months’ CrossFit experience at another gym? We offer one week of CrossFit classes FREE to give you the opportunity to check out our program, our coaches, and our community of athletes.       My husband Charles introduced me to CrossFit. He took me to the gym with him for a workout after he’d been doing CrossFit for a few months. About a month after that he pretty much told me he wanted to open a CrossFit gym and I remember thinking “Let’s do this!”. I became a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer in October 2013, after being ”Queen Gopher” at CrossFit Altius for six months.  I decided to become a coach when I realized that nothing made me happier than seeing our members accomplish their goals–whether it be running their first mile, their first pull-up or muscle-up or box jump, or the personal best back squat they’ve been chasing.  I want to be a part of that as many times as I possibly can!

      The majority of my athletic experience before CrossFit comes from distance running and martial arts.  I am a marathoner and I earned a black belt in Kung Fu.  I thought I was fit!  After my first CrossFit workout I realized I only had a small piece of the fitness pie.  CrossFit introduced me to real strength training, and I am so thankful that I am now on the path to A Higher Form of Fitness, becoming stronger and more well rounded physically and mentally.  There is still so much for me to learn, and a long row to hoe before I accomplish my own fitness goals, but I am so very grateful that I have the opportunity to do it within the CrossFit community.  Even better than that, it’s such a blessing to be a coach in the Altius Army!

      I’ve been interested in health and physical training from a young age.
      After wrestling in high school, I joined the United States Marine Corps
      where I gained extensive training in advanced desert warfare, hand-to-hand
      combat, USMC martial arts (black belt), and physical/mental preparedness.
      After serving 3 tours in Iraq (2 in Al Qaim, 1 in Al Asad), I
      decided to leave the military and focus on my civilian life. This is when my CrossFit journey truly began.

      I had decided to concentrate on weightlifting once I was out of the
      Military. I also gained my Associate of Science degree in Physical
      Education in May 2011. After a friend introduced me to CrossFit, I
      started integrating CrossFit workouts into my strength program, with great
      success. I soon realized that CrossFit was my avenue to true fitness, both
      physical and mental. I formally started CrossFit full-time in October
      2012, and haven¹t looked back. I earned my CrossFit Level 1 Trainer Certification in March 2013 and came on staff at CrossFit Altius at its opening in April 2013. My personal goals are to continue my growth as a CrossFit athlete using
      exceptional programming/training, further my coaching experiences and earn my CrossFit Gymnastics certification.

      I have enjoyed coaching new and seasoned athletes, watching them grow
      physically, mentally and emotionally. I truly enjoy coaching people past
      the barriers they thought they could never overcome. I have witnessed and
      participated in the changing of people’s lives for the better, enabling
      people to become healthier and to exceed their personal goals. It has
      been a wonderful ride watching CrossFit Altius grow as a supportive
      community and I look forward to all the growth and successes of Altius and
      all the individual athletes in the future.

      Just go. Getting out the door is always the hardest part.

      One of my earliest ‘fitness’ memories is of my dad running marathons.  I knew I wanted to be a runner, and while at Brookwood High School I ran for the best Cross Country team in the state of Georgia.  I had a 5k PR in the mid 15’s.  Sidelined from running in college due to an IT Band problem, I gained 100 pounds.  You read that right, 100 pounds.  In three months.  I became sedentary and complacent regarding my lifestyle after college, until I got a wake up call at age 37 from my doctor.  I was 240 pounds, on blood pressure medication, prescribed a new cholesterol medication, and was faced with the reality that I might die before I turned 50.  I remember going home and talking to my wife about that doctor visit.  I told her I was changing my lifestyle.  That started my real journey into fitness.

      I did a lot of research on nutrition and started running again.  Nine months later I was 80 pounds lighter and free of all medication.  I focused solely on my running at first, even hiring a personal trainer to help me with strength work so that I could begin to compete again.  I finished in the top 1% of three races, and then I finished 75th out of 11+ thousand runners at the 2012 Savannah Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon.  I enjoyed the success I regained in competitive running, but something was missing at the gym.  My morning routines had become BORING, as they tend to do in a globo-gym environment.  That is when I found CrossFit.  One WOD and I was hooked.  I signed up for a membership the next day and haven’t looked back since.

      I believe that I have been called to help others achieve the best version of themselves possible.  My personal life experiences give me insight into both the highs of victory and the lows of self-defeat.  This calling led me to become a Level 1 CrossFit Trainer and open CrossFit Altius.  I’m always seeking to learn and become the best version of myself possible, including CrossFitter and Coach.  I look forward to helping you achieve ‘A Higher Form of Fitness’.

      After becoming a mom to four kids in five years, my fitness consisted of group classes at the Y, mostly step aerobics, Pilates, or yoga (can you say free child care?). I was not extremely consistent and it showed. After watching my husband, Brian, complete a half marathon and seeing how accomplished the runners appeared, I decided to give running a try. This time I was consistent. I completed a couple of half marathons myself, along with a full 26.2 in 2013. These long distances took a lot of time away from the family though, so I knew that wasn’t going to be a great long term answer to being healthy. About this time, Brian was introduced to CrossFit. He fell in love immediately. I wanted nothing to do with it. I didn’t want to lift weights! I didn’t want to look masculine. I was so uninformed!! Six months after my husband joined, I made the “mistake” of walking into the box in workout clothes and got roped into my first WOD. Since then I have become convinced there is no better way to increase fitness, both physically and mentally.

      Much of my life my inner monologue has been one of fear. Fear of risk. Fear of failure. But to be alive is to risk and to fail. Each day I walk into the box, I am forced to acknowledge that voice and dance with that fear. As a trainer, I am excited to help people overcome the limits that they are facing themselves. To help them run faster or farther, to jump higher and lift heavier. To face the challenges in the gym so they can face the challenges in their lives with confidence.

    Fundamentals of CrossFit

    No one has CrossFit experience when they start CrossFit! You don’t even have to have a fitness background to begin CrossFit. Join us for a four-week program designed to familiarize you with the various CrossFit movements and principles. Learn the 10 General Physical Preparedness Skills and how they relate to your health. Discuss the importance of nutrition and how to implement positive changes in your diet. Receive instruction and coaching on the foundational movements of CrossFit. This is a learning opportunity designed to prepare you to enter our group classes with the confidence to move safely and effectively. You will certainly make some new friends in the process and know what it feels like to be a part of the Altius Army community!

    Why should you choose this class?

    • All participants are new to CrossFit.
    • A qualified coach guides you through all of the movements you can expect to see in a CrossFit class.
    • Nutrition counseling is included with every class to help put you on the right track from the very beginning.
    • You can expect to begin reaping the benefits of a healthier lifestyle in four weeks: increased stamina, strength, confidence, and overall sense of well-being.

    What should you expect?

    • To be challenged and motivated!
    • We are going to meet YOU where YOU are. All fitness levels are welcome. Every movement can be scaled and/or modified for any physical limitation. No athlete left behind!

    How are classes run?

    • Classes will be limited in size to fifteen participants. This ensures your coach will be able to afford everyone individualized attention when they need it most.
    • Coaches will lead warm-ups and give explanations/demonstrations of each movement performed.
    • Participants will experience a high-intensity, fully scalable workout designed to increase your strength, cardiovascular endurance, and overall fitness.

    Women ONLY Intro to Fitness

    What would jump start you on your path to becoming the best version of you possible? Weight loss? Nutrition help? Getting stronger? Changing your body composition? Making new friends in a positive, encouraging atmosphere? Establishing new, healthier lifestyle habits? If you answered “Yes!” to any of the above, then this class is for you!

    CrossFit Altius is excited about the start of our next Women ONLY Intro to Fitness class. We encounter so many women who are ready to make a change but simply don’t know where to start. People are often under the impression that they are not fit enough to begin a fitness program. Our goal with this class is to teach you how to set goals that can be achieved in six weeks’ time and then give you the tools to CRUSH THEM.

    Why should you choose this class?

    • An ALL FEMALE class led by a FEMALE trainer. We want to welcome you to a class where you feel free to discuss anything and everything and perform any movement without the pressure of wondering who is watching or listening.
    • A full six-week nutrition plan–including shopping lists and recipes–that is meant to help you achieve maximum results in six weeks.
    • One hour classes allow you to get in, get your fitness on, and then get on with the rest of your busy life.

    Doing the Women Only 6-week class was one of the best decisions of my life. I have gained confidence, strength, and new friendships. I have lost 12 pounds, 10 inches, and self doubt! I am so thankful for the instruction and education that Vanessa provided to us!  –Becca R.

    Let me begin by saying I joined the CrossFit Women Only class at age 44 with no experience and a good bit of fear. Fear of not being able to keep up, fear of injury, and fear of becoming “bulky”. I was so wrong! Our instructor, Vanessa, worked with us on nutrition as well as our workouts. She coached us through every new movement, praised our achievements, and encouraged us to work harder. After only two weeks, I felt amazing! Now I’m completely hooked, lost 10 pounds in just 6 weeks, and found a healthy new lifestyle. But honestly, the best thing about the class and CrossFit Altius is the people. I have made friendships with an incredible group of ladies in this class and even though the class is over, we continue to stay in touch, support one another, and motivate each other to achieve our goals.     I came to the Women Only class because I needed a change. Knew the hype about CrossFit so I figured what the heck? After my first class, it was very apparent this class and CrossFit Altius were something special. The coaches have extensive knowledge about the body and truly care about each participant.
